Compressed air systems produce condensate, a mixture of water and oil (from lubricants used in compressors). Discharging this mixture directly into the environment violates regulations in most jurisdictions because oil is a pollutant. An oil-water separator removes the oil, allowing the water to be discharged safely and legally.
